The first big part of the house building process was completed with the footers and foundation at the end of May. The next step was to start framing and this is even more exciting than the foundation! They started framing in the basement with a few steel beams and then we started to see the basement walls take shape. Our design that was on drawings for so long was finally coming to life.
I am standing at the front of the house looking into the basement. The back side opening shows the walk out basement portion. Most of that wall will be glass!
After the supporting walls and all the framing was done in the basement they put on the floor joists and all of sudden we were able to walk on the first floor! At this point it was still hard to imagine the rooms on the first floor but at least we were able to get a feel for the view and see the general space. The photo below is me standing in the master bathroom on the far side of the house. The cut out on the left side of the picture will be the stairs that lead to the basement.
Have I mentioned that our window package is one of the major highlights of our design? Drew and I always agreed that we wanted a ton of natural light flooding the house and we wanted to maximize the views of the backyard. Just look at that amazing tree line! This is the living room which is basically a wall of windows! I can just imagine a cold winter day lounging on the sectional watching the snow fall with a fire on.
Something that Drew and I also agreed on from the beginning is that we didn’t want an open floor plan. Yep, you heard that right…we did not want one huge room with our living, kitchen and dining. I know that open floor plans are all the rage, but we felt like our entertaining space will be the kitchen and breakfast nook that leads out to our screened porch so we didn’t want to have the living room be a part of that space. We also decided to create a formal dining room right off the kitchen. Below I’m standing in the kitchen looking into the 5 foot opening to the formal dining room. Of course, more windows!
I already have big plans for the formal dining room and I can’t wait to share my inspiration board. We also snapped a quick picture while standing in the backyard looking at the walk out basement. I can’t wait to see all the glass that will be on the back elevation!
Last but not least is the master bedroom. We decided on a smaller master bedroom in order to get a large walk in closet and master bathroom. I can’t wait until the master closet starts coming together! We designed a his and hers side and I’m thinking I may need some wallpaper in the closet too. Another huge window in the bedroom so we can wake up to that view every morning!
I can’t wait for the first floor to be finished so they can start on the second floor. The second floor will sit on the main portion of the house so it is not a traditional 2 story. The kids bedrooms, a bathroom and a bonus room will be on the second floor. We designed it so our kids could have their own space as they grew, and I know that bonus room will have many slumber parties over the years! Stay tuned for another update next week! Hopefully they will have the rest of the first floor framed and I can give you a tour of the pantry, guest room, and laundry area.
